Simon Moore wins the 2011 Sporting Proud Olympic Triathlon at Brittas Bay
Simon Moore took the Olympic title in Brittas last weekend with a time of 2hrs, 49mins and 15 seconds. Team Jimmy Fennelly won the Olympic relay in a time of 2hrs, 52mins and 16 seconds.
Over on the Sprint course, Paul Creedon won the Male event in a time of 1hr, 25mins and 10 seconds and Grainne McGuckian led the ladies in 1hr, 26mins and 46 seconds. The Sprint Relay was won by Team Colin Molloy in a time of 1hr, 27mins and 46 seconds.

Quinn & Mullen rule the day at Brittas Bay
The Gods looked favourably on the Sporting Proud crew this weekend and sent near perfect conditions for the Annual Sporting Proud Triathlon.
Eamonn Quinn and Caron Mullen won the Men's and Ladies competition respectively at this increasingly popular charity Triathlon. Quinn completed the event in just two hours, twenty-six minutes and fifty-two seconds. Mullen came in at two hours, forty-nine minutes and forty-four seconds.
This was the 12th. time the annual event has been held at Britas Bay and was run in aid of the Niall Mellon Township Trust. More specifically, funds raised from the event will enable the building of a school hall in the Wallacedene area of Cape Town where it will be accessible by more than 700 schools. The building is the first of its kind in the Cape Town area.
Niall Mellon, founder of the Niall Mellon Township Trust commented: “Once again, the Sporting Proud Team has put together an excellent event and we were thrilled to be part of it. It was a great day for family fun in Brittas and the Sporting Proud Team made us all proud on the day”.

Sporting Proud Triathlon to fund the building of a School Hall in Capetown with the Niall Mellon Trust
In 2009, proceeds from the Triathlon will enable us to provide funding to the Niall Mellon Trust for the building of a new hall for school children in Wallacedene, Cape Town, South Africa.
WIth more than 700 schools in Cape Town it seemed an incredible opportunity for us to build the very FIRST School Hall - a facility that will be used for extra-curricular activities essential to the enrichment of the education of thousands of hugely disadvantaged kids.
WIth your help, the children of Wallacedene will get to enjoy and benefit from engaging in the type of things we take for granted in our own schools at home. Things like participating in a school play, or showing off their capabilities in the performing arts, debating, dancing or gymnastics. It's a unique opportunity for us to make a significant difference for children in a truly deprived area of Cape Town.

Cheque for €114k handed over to St. Catherines
We met with the wonderful people in St. Catherine's last week to deliver the pretty wonderful news that this year's events had raised a whopping €114,352 for their physiotherapy unit. That's a chunky cheque at the best of times but in a recession it's simply unbelievable! We're hugely grateful to you all for making it possible.
One of the things we get really buzzed about at Sporting Proud is the fact that every year, within a couple of months of the event, our supporters get to see the specifics of how their efforts have translated into results. Real, specific results that impact on the lives of kids. Now.
We took the time last week to kick-the-tyres on some of the high-tech equipment that this year's cheque has provided to the fantastic physios that work in St. Catherines. They've always done a super job for the kids in their care, but this stuff helps them to do it faster and more efficiently. So more kids get to do more physio, more often and that can make a difference. A huge difference. It can be the difference between a child learning to walk or not. The new facility at St. Catherine's enables them to schedule a whopping 70 seperate physio sessions every week. We think you'll agree that's money well spent.
The cheque did something else too. It took Sporting Proud over the Million Euro mark in terms of funds raised since it's inception. That represents a lot of miles against the current in the bay, or the Southerly wind on the N11. A lot of begging and cajoling by the athletes who support the event year after year. A lot of good stuff for kids here in Ireland and further afield who deserve more. Thanks for playing your part

Gerard McGrath and Carron Mullen win the 2008 Men's/Ladies' events respectively
On a windswept day in Brittas, Gerard McGrath and Carron Mullen won the 2008 Sporting Proud Triathlon in the respective Men's and Ladies' categories.
High seas and a small craft warning forced the organisers to abandon the swim and replace it with a 4km "sprint". The cycle and 10k run sections took place as planned with the athletes battling against a Northeasterly wind on the coastal section of the cycle loop - and freewheeling along the N11 on the south-facing part of the loop. On balance, this was considered the most difficult cycle in the history of the Sporting Proud Triathlons.
McGrath's winning time was 2hrs, 20 minutes and 26 seconds and Mullen finished in 2hrs, 42 minutes and 46 seconds.
Second and third place in the Men's competition went to Garrett McCabe and Derrick Evans and in the Ladies' competition to Ruth Shanahan and Lorraine Hardy.

Further details will follow on 15th. April 2008
10 January 2008
